STRONG EMOTIONS DURING MEDITATION

Strong emotions can be used as powerful tools in meditation practice.  Sometimes when we sit there seems to be nothing to work with (but even that is something to work with).  But other times we have significant issues before us.

For example, anger is a very strong emotion.  When anger has arisen I try to look at it intelligently.  What exactly is anger?  We can all see that it is energy, a very vivid and almost tangible energy.  This energy is the same energy as other strong emotions such as love.  The main difference is the storyline embedded within the energy.

In my meditation practice I take the strong emotion of anger and I acknowledge its presence, I respect it and validate it.  Then I mentally describe its appearance and its feeling within my mind and body.  Finally I dissect it, separating the energy from the storyline.  This method can be used with any emotion.  We all experience these strong emotions so we are not alone in our efforts to deal with them.
